چکیده

In the hold-up problem incomplete contracts cause the proceeds of relation-specific investments to be allocated by ex-post bargaining. The present paper investigates the efficiency of incomplete contracts if individuals have heterogeneous preferences implying heterogeneous bargaining behavior and equally important preferences are private information. As the sunk investment costs can thus potentially signal preferences, they can influence beliefs and consequently bargaining outcomes. The necessities of signalling are shown to generate very strong investment incentives. These incentives are based on the desire not to reveal information that is unfavorable in the ensuing bargaining. After finding all perfect Bayesian equilibria in pure strategies, the paper derives the necessary and sufficient conditions under which it is optimal to invest and trade efficiently. Bargaining under incomplete information, fairness, and the hold-up problem ¬リニ

This paper investigates the efficiency of incomplete contracts if the investors have heterogenous preferences implying heterogenous bargaining behavior, and if these preferences are private information. In the hold-up problem, incomplete contracts cause the proceeds of the investments to be shared by bargaining. Fair-minded individuals reject positive but unfair offers even if this causes a bar...

Crying Over Spilt Milk: Sunk Costs, Fairness Norms and the Hold-up Problem

This article explores a possible connection between two behavioural anomalies in economics, the observed responsiveness of individual decision makers to sunk costs, and the apparent failure of backward induction to predict outcomes in experimental bargaining games. In particular, we show that under some conditions, a ‘sunk cost sensitive’ fairness norm can evolve in such environments. Under thi...

Acquisition and Disclosure of Information as a Hold-up Problem

The acquisition of information prior to sale gives rise to a hold-up situation quite naturally. Yet, while the bulk of the literature on the hold-up problem considers negotiations under symmetric information where cooperative short-cuts such as split the di¤erence capture the outcome of bargaining, in the present setting, parties negotiate under asymmetric information where the outcome must be ...

Bargaining under Asymmetric Information and the Hold-up Problem

The hold-up problem is considered a fundamental determinant of contractual and organizational structure. We study a model in which players first make relation-specific investments and then bargain over the price to exchange a good. We present a new form of misallocation of resources that may arise if one of the sides has private information in the bargaining phase. In general, the outcome of ba...
